Breaking Every Rule in the Nursing Career Playbook
The surprising truth about telephonic case management from someone who's living it.
Hey Nurse Friend,
Earlier this week, I had an insightful conversation with a telephone case manager. If you have not had the chance to listen, that's fine. Maybe you can take a listen this weekend. This conversation was so insightful because the nurse’s experience contradicts everything you read and even the advice I’ve given about remote nursing positions.
Let me tell you about Colleen. She is a thriving remote telephonic nurse case manager. Here are three highlights from Colleen’s story:
🤯She landed a remote nursing role with less than 3 years of nursing experience
🏥 She has no prior case management experience
✨ She found her role at a job fair (who knew remote positions were being recruited at job fairs?)
📱 And here's the biggest surprise: Have you heard the horror stories about telephonic case management roles? The overwhelming caseloads? Being chained to your phone?
Her reality? Completely different.
Instead of the nightmare scenarios we often hear about, she's experiencing:
Manageable caseloads
Reasonable expectations
Work-life balance that works
Now, I know what you might be thinking - "But I've heard such terrible things about telephonic case management..." or "Everyone says you need years of bedside experience..."
Here's the thing: Her story proves that there's no universal truth in nursing careers. The "horror stories" we hear? They're not the whole picture. The "rules" we often hear about? They're more like guidelines, and sometimes they're meant to be challenged.
The biggest lesson here? You can write your own story.
Your experience doesn't have to match the scary stories or common warnings.
Whether you:
Have 2 years of experience or 20
Work bedside or have never stepped foot in a hospital
Find opportunities in traditional or unexpected places
Are considering roles you've heard "negative things" about
What matters is knowing what you want and being willing to discover the truth for yourself rather than letting others' stories limit your possibilities.
So today, I want you to ask yourself: What "rules" or "horror stories" have you accepted as truth about your nursing career that might actually just be someone else's experience? What would you explore if you were open to writing your own story?
Because here's the truth: Your nursing journey can be whatever you want it to be. You just have to decide what you want and be brave enough to go after it.
Ready to explore what's possible in your nursing career? Let's connect! Drop a comment and let me know what role you've been hesitant about because of others' stories. Let's challenge those assumptions together!
Here's to writing your own story!
Things I am loving this week:
1. This Tabitha Brown mug from Target. How cute is this? I just love it!
As always, thank you for your support. If you have any questions, you can always reply directly to the email. If you tried in the past, I fixed the issue :)
