Hey Nurse Friend,
You are not “just a nurse”.
For years, I felt lost in my nursing career. I searched for every possible way out because I was unfulfilled and wanted more from my professional life. Although I couldn't imagine myself doing anything else, I didn’t believe I had transferable skills. I struggled to understand my value as a nurse and how that value extended beyond patient care.
It's easy to feel this way. As nurses, we perform patient care tasks daily, often with such urgency that we don’t take the time to recognize the skills we're using. We possess valuable skills that go far beyond the bedside.
My challenge, which I believe many nurses share, is the lack of language to articulate our skills. We are highly skilled healthcare professionals, yet we often downplay our abilities by referring to ourselves as “just nurses” or saying we “just pass meds.”

Next time you’re at work, I want you to slow down and take inventory of all the skills you use throughout your shift.
Remember:
Every "basic" nursing task combines multiple professional skills
What feels routine to you is actually complex project management
Your daily activities use advanced professional skills
Clinical skills translate to business skills
You're not "just" doing anything - you're managing complex processes
You've worked too hard to minimize your expertise with the word "just." In 2025, we're leaving that word behind and embracing our identity as highly skilled healthcare professionals.
